In terms of equipment needed for drifting or performance driving, you will need at least a rwd car with a manual transmission. You also, at minimum, will want a limited slip differential. This will ensure both tires spin and therefore kick out the rear-end of the car. For someone just starting out I would personally recommend a welded differential, if possible, it will make it very easy to kick the rear end on an underpowered car. Another quality upgrade that can be made is Coilovers, Coilovers will drastically reduce the body roll when tossing the weight of the car or while sideways around a corner. Once you have some quality coilovers installed and you are starting to get comfortable with the car, you should likely look into installing an angle kit on the car, although this is not necessary, it will improve the car a lot! An angle kit will increase the amount of steering angle the car has. This in turn will allow for the rear end of the car to swing out much more before you reach a point where you can no longer turn the wheels to correct. In some cases an angle kit will also add a positive Ackermann angle to the car. Adding Ackermann angle will help make the car easier to control in the corners, it does have downsides, but very rarely will you see drivers running negative and zero Ackermann setups. Now there are many other modifications you should get for your car and most of them will likley come before an angle kit. Although every car is different and will need different modifications or fixes to help them get down the track better. I would encourage you to do research on a good chassis for the sport and see what it takes to get them to a good point for the track.
